A volunteer at last year’s Impact Suffolk food giveaway hands out food to attendees at the event. Churches, youth groups and individual volunteers are needed for this year’s giveaway.

Churches, youth groups and individual volunteers are needed to help with a Thanksgiving food giveaway sponsored by Impact Suffolk.

The distribution will occur Nov. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the tennis courts behind Farm Fresh on North Main Street.

“It’s to meet a need in the city, but also it’s to get the churches working together and to show a united body of Christ,” said Dot Dalton, president of Impact Suffolk.

Churches are needed to sign up to bring and help distribute food.

“We need some more churches,” Dalton said. The organization sent out a postcard asking for churches to sign up, but still needs more help.

“We really could use youth groups,” Dalton said. “The big thing we could use is people with some strong backs” to carry bags to cars.

Last year, 30 churches and six organizations brought and distributed food to more than 700 people.

“Things are coming into place pretty good right now” for this year’s event, Dalton said. The organization is pricing turkeys and chickens, and already has enough stuffing, string beans, corn and coffee.

They are especially looking for churches to bring canned peas and sweet potatoes, Dalton said.

“It’s not too late to start getting them,” Dalton said.
