The Luter Family YMCA in Smithfield celebrated a milestone yesterday that brings the center one step closer to the completion of an expansion.

Staff, board members and patrons of the center participated Monday in the topping out ceremony, which is an event that is held when a building’s structure is completed.

Julie Beaudin, with Luter Family YMCA membership services, said the center definitely needs the extra room.

“It’ll be great for the members,” she said.

The expansion started this summer and has a projected completion date of mid-December.

For the expansion, the wellness center at the YMCA will add 3,700 square feet for new equipment, such as a suspension training workout station, five new treadmills and three new spin cycles.

The wellness center will also get new LCD televisions and a personal assessment room.

Additionally, the child care center will get 600 more square feet from the renovation, and the room will be divided into two activity areas to separate the infants and toddlers from the older children.

YMCA is also getting a completely new entrance to the center with new furniture added, a revamped group exercise room and 30 more parking spaces.
