Rawley William Lewter

Rawley William Lewter, 93, of 507 Spruce St. Ext., died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was the widow of Virginia Mae Joyner Lewter and the son of the late Charlie T. Lewter Sr. and Lillie Peele Lewter. He was predeceased by a sister, Clarine Artis, and four brothers, Charlie T. Lewter Jr., Elton Lewter, Clyde Lewter and Chester Lewter.

He retired from Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. He was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church, where he served as Deacon Emeritus, a trustee and a member of the Senior Choir and Male Chorus. He served in many organizations and capacities such as past treasurer and past exalted ruler of the Greater Suffolk Lodge No. 206 I.B.P.O.E., past worshipful master of Mount Vernon Lodge No. 48 PHA, and past patron of the Nansemond Chapter No. 31 Order of the Eastern Star.

He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted son, Ronald L. Lewter (Donna); two grandchildren, Tionna L. Fulgham (James) and Jaleesa M. Lewter; goddaughter, Chandra Godette; brothers, Wallace Lewter (Marion) and Melvin Lewter; caregivers, great-niece Julia Artis, Allen Williford; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Christian Church officiated by Bishop Carlton R. Upton Sr. The family will be at 507 Spruce St. Ext.
