A black-tie holiday affair on Saturday could bring you the new best friend you’ve been seeking.

The Suffolk Humane Society is holding a “black tie” adoption event on Saturday. Cats, kittens and rabbits that are black, white or “tuxedo” will be up for adoption.

Kay Hurley, director of community outreach for the society, said there happen to be several “black-tie” animals at the shelter right now.

“It was just a way to bring attention to them and tie it in with the holiday,” she said.

Volunteers will be dressed in black pants and white shirts in honor of the theme.
“It will be fun, and hopefully we’ll have some good results,” Hurley said.

Two weeks from now, however, cats and dogs will be encouraged to “come as they are” in holiday casual. Cats of all ages and colors will be available for adoption on Dec. 17, and all dogs and cats will be available on Dec. 18.

All the adoption events will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chesapeake Square PetSmart. Suffolk Humane Society and Suffolk Animal Control are sponsoring the adoption events.

In addition, pets can get their photos taken with Santa at each event for $9.95, and Suffolk Humane will receive a part of the proceeds.

“We want to be sure that homeless pets aren’t overlooked during this busy time of year,” said Lee Murphy, adoptions and foster coordinator for Suffolk Humane. “A new best friend could be the perfect gift for yourself and add so much love to your home.”

To raise money for their needs, the humane society also will hold a delicious fundraiser next week.

Anybody who eats at Buffalo Wild Wings in Harbour View from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 8 and presents the fundraiser coupon will have 10 percent of the bill donated to the humane society.

“They’re doing this fundraiser for us, and we hope it will become an ongoing thing and will have lots of community support,” Hurley said. “This is a good way to donate to charity and have a great time.”

The coupon can be downloaded from the society’s website, www.suffolkhumanesociety.com. The restaurant is located at 7386 Harbour Town Parkway, near the movie theaters.
