A downtown church will conduct a food giveaway this week to help area residents with their food bills.

Higher Ground Outreach Church, 132 Bank St., will hand out meat, produce and dry goods provided by the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. The giveaway will be held Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

This is the church’s second food giveaway. The first occurred in August and served about 225 families.

“We’re looking to do about the same number this time,” Pastor Cordell Carter said.

The public is welcome at the giveaway, and there will be no proof of income required to receive food.
