In the lane: Nansemond-Suffolk senior Morgan Lokie goes down the lane to the basket against Windsor Wednesday evening at NSA. Lokie had eight points and eight assists as the Lady Saints won 78-13 to go to a 3-1 record.

Nansemond-Suffolk’s girls basketball team made it three blowout wins out of its first four games this season, scoring 33 straight points in one stretch and going on to a 78-13 win over visiting Windsor Wednesday night.

Getting victories isn’t new for the Lady Saints, but beating the Lady Dukes, Portsmouth Christian and StoneBridge each by 40 or more points is new territory for NSA (3-1).

“We’re doing a better job of playing to our level,” said NSA head coach and former Lady Saint star guard Kim Aston. “Even last year we’d play sloppy when we played weaker teams.”

Windsor led 1-0 with a free throw on the first Lady Duke possession of the game. The Lady Saints scored the next 33 points.

Windsor tried pressing and trapping the Lady Saints, only for quick, long passes over and through the Lady Duke defense for easy lay-ups.

Forwards Sarah Baldwin and Kaylor Nash scored two lay-ins each in the early minutes. Morgan Lokie scored three straight lay-ups in the last minute of the first period, giving NSA a 20-1 lead at the end of the quarter. Jessica Pieroni added six points in the first period.

The last three periods were about getting all 10 Lady Saints equal experience out on the floor. Pieroni led NSA with 18 points as seven Lady Saints scored seven points or more.

Baldwin had 10 points, five blocks, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Lokie had eight points and eight assists. Reserves Harper Birdsong and Sarah Higinbotham added 10 and seven points respectively.

NSA’s only setback in the early stages of this season is actually Aston’s best teaching tool so far. Cox, from the Beach District, beat NSA 45-42 on Monday.

“We played great defense and rebounded really well but offensively we didn’t attack. Cox was physical and aggressive and we didn’t attack like we needed to,” Aston said.

Aston expects a contest more along the lines of how Cox played the Lady Saints on Friday when Collegiate of Richmond visits NSA.

“I think we’ve played Collegiate to a five-point game or less one way or the other every time since I’ve been here,” Aston said.

The Lady Cougars and Lady Saints play at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
