Thanks for help with wreaths

To the editor:
I want to offer my sincere thanks to the people of Hampton Roads — and especially Suffolk — for your support for the Horton Wreath Society this year.
We purchased 3,450 wreaths for the cemetery and had an excellent program on Dec. 10. Chief Warrant Officer Phillip Brashear gave an excellent speech. Dr. David Lotz played beautifully on the bagpipes, and the Lakeland Chamber Players were outstanding. Mayor Linda Johnson had very nice remarks, and Pastor Richard Carpenter, chaplain, gave a special blessing for the day.
The use of golf carts from Carts Unlimited and from Bruce Bowles was appreciated. The speaker system, from Duke Entertainment and Wayne, was perfect. Chick-fil-A was generous with coupons for the Scouts who participated.
Mr. Pond let us use a warehouse for storage; you can’t put 3,450 wreaths just anywhere! The 18-wheeler came from Beach Marine Service. The Virginia Peanut Growers gave peanuts for everyone, and the Horton family provided hot drinks, while the Tidewater Tidal Waves provided cookies.
Thanks to the Scouts, the motorcycle escorts and the singers. And the support we received from staff and grounds crew at the cemetery was outstanding. And thanks to the Suffolk News-Herald for the excellent coverage.
Unfortunately, some people walked away with wreaths! This should never have happened. We know who you are. Please don’t ever return; we don’t need you.
Thank you, one and all, for your support and for attending. We will not forget our veterans.
Jeanne Banks
Chair, Horton Wreath Society
