Recycling drive collects 8,440 pounds of items

City employees, the Suffolk Clean Community Commission and volunteers collected 94 tires, among other things, at a recycling drive held on Dec. 17 at Bennett’s Creek Park.

The Suffolk Clean Community Commission held a successful recycling drive and tire amnesty day Dec. 17 at Bennett’s Creek Park.

The SCCC partnered with area companies and volunteers to provide the opportunity for residents and businesses to recycle.

Totals for the day included:

  • 94 tires picked up by Suffolk Department of Public Works Refuse Division
  • 8,440 pounds of used electronics and recyclables collected by TFC Recycling
  • 81 different vehicles dropped off materials
  • 92 bags of plastic bags collected
  • 600 pounds of documents shredded
  • 30 pounds of polystyrene processed by Styro Thermo Flyers

SCCC Chairperson Kathy Russell, City of Suffolk Litter Control Coordinator Michael Griffith, and eight volunteers, including one student from the International Baccalaureate program at King’s Fork High School, helped coordinate the onsite efforts.

The Suffolk Clean Community Commission will hold its next recycling drive and tire amnesty day on March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a location in downtown Suffolk.
