Suffolk firefighters were unable to save a home and pickup truck that caught fire on Gates Road on Tuesday morning.

A home on Gates Road was destroyed by a fire that started Tuesday morning when, according to the initial report, a wood heater there exploded.

Officials from the Red Cross stepped in to help the two adults who were displaced after the fire destroyed their home and a pickup truck in the 9300 block of Gates Road, according to a Suffolk spokesperson.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the fire at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, Suffolk spokesperson Diana Klink stated in a press release. According to Klink, the caller advised dispatchers that a heater had exploded, but that both occupants of the home had been evacuated safely.

When firefighters arrived at the home, they found the building and the vehicle were both engulfed in flame, Klink added. Gates Road was closed temporarily while firefighters fought the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Klink stated in the release.
