Isle of Wight Academy survived another white-knuckle conference matchup, defeating Portsmouth Christian 59-56 on Friday night.
After finding themselves down 27-14 at halftime, the Chargers got going in the second half.
Austin Rogers gave IWA its first lead of the game, 43-41, with a field goal with seven minutes left in the game. But that was not the end of the drama. With the Chargers up 50-49 and 4:21 left, leading scorer Nathan Sivertson committed his fourth personal foul and then contested the call. He fouled out with a technical foul. The Patriots made two of three foul shots attempts to give them the lead, 51-50.
But junior Rainer Marfio stepped up, making consecutive baskets to restore and build the Charger lead at 54-51, with 2:47 to go. Marfio and teammate Josh Thomas combined to go 3-for-4 from the line in the last 2 minutes to preserve the win.
IWA is 14-4, 7-2 in the Metro Conference. PCS falls to 8-9, 4-5.
The leading scorer for Isle of Wight was Marfio, with 16 points. Sivertson added 13, and Ben Epps contributed nine.
