The Xi Delta Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority and the Disabled American Veterans both are planning “Sweetheart Balls” for Feb. 11.

“All of the proceeds we make from the ball go to scholarships for local high school seniors,” said Amanda Moegenberg, the “Sweetheart Queen” for this year’s event.

This is the 63rd annual Sweetheart Ball hosted by the sorority. The event has become a favorite of people throughout the community, regardless of whether they are associated with the sorority, Moegenberg said. Last year, they raised enough money to give four scholarships to local high school seniors.

“We as a community should support our local high school seniors and help provide them with what they need to further their education,” she said. “You don’t have anything else like this in Suffolk. It’s a good chance for people to get out of the house and dance with a band.”

The event will be held at the Suffolk Shrine Club, 500 Elizabeth St., from 8 a.m. to midnight Feb. 11.

The event will include refreshments, dancing, a 50/50 raffle and basket raffles, and more.

Each ticket is $35 per couple or $20 for singles and includes two entries for the raffle. Proceeds from the raffles also fund the scholarships.

Tickets should be purchased in advance by calling 635-5918.

In addition, Chapter Five of the Disabled American Veterans is hosting its Sweetheart Ball on Feb. 11 at 139 S. Saratoga St. Cocktail hour is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. All veterans are invited to attend, and there will be plenty of activities throughout the evening.

RSVPs are requested. Members can sign up at the chapter; all others should call Sonny Blizzard at 934-2695 or 335-2995, or Clarence Lee at 334-2480.
