Robert D. Collins, 70, of 6900 Gates Road, Suffolk, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Nansemond County and the son of the late Oscar L. Collins and L. Bernice Collins. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Suberna Walden.

He attended Nansemond County Training School. He retired as a brick mason from Walden Masonry He was a member of Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ, where he was a member of the choir, usher board, trustee, and president of the Layman’s Fellowship.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Omato J. Collins; four daughters, Manya Hicks (French), of Newport News, Va., Vickie Sykes (James), of Denver, Colo., Beverly Steward and Regina Silver, both of Suffolk; four sisters, Thelma Smith (Arthur), Cleo Johnson, Marjorie V. Jones, all of Suffolk, and a devoted sister, Mairion Johnson, of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, George Collins (Deborah), of Sherman, Texas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ¸7945 Corinth Chapel Road, officiated by the Rev. John Meyers. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Corinth Chapel United Church Cemetery. A wake will be held on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
