Isle of Wight Academy got 18 points from junior Nathan Sivertson to top Hampton Christian, 63-60, Friday in the final regular-season contest for both teams.

The Chargers finished the year 19-6, 12-4 in the Metro Athletic Conference, and begin conference tournament play at 6:45 p.m. Thursday versus Portsmouth Christian at Alliance Christian.

Friday’s game was a return to form for the two teams. IWA survived a 61-59 thriller Jan. 13 on Benjamin A. Vaughan Court. It was clear early on that this game would be the same way, with IWA clinging to a 17-16 lead after a quarter but trailing by 7, 37-30, at halftime.

But the Chargers scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half to regain the lead. They led by four points, 47-43, going into the fourth quarter. The Warriors could get no closer than 2 points, as when Lawrence Williams scored to make it 51-49 IWA, and they ultimately lost by three.

Williams was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. Sivertson’s classmate, Rainer Marfio, had 17 points, and senior Ben Epps had 11. The Chargers out-rebounded Hampton Christian 44-20; Sivertson had 17, and Marfio had 9. Williams led Hampton with nine.

Hampton finishes the year at 11-14, 7-8.
