During the early afternoon at 1:10 p.m., Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, Mrs. Elbernia C. Lee entered into eternal rest at Sentara Obici Hospital. Mrs. Lee was the widow of the late Mr. Albert Lee, of the Whaleyville community of Suffolk. She was the daughter of the late Elijah and Elnora Dillard Copeland, born on Aug. 13, 1919. Three brothers preceded her in death: Lexie, George and David Copeland.
Mrs. Lee began her career in the Suffolk Public Schools food service department at Nansemond County Training School/Southwestern High School. Later, she was promoted to food service director, where she retired. She worked for many years in the Whaleyville community on voter registration and more than 20 years as a poll worker in the Whaleyville precinct.
She leaves to remember her life: one daughter, Jean L. Copeland (Enoch); two sons, Albert and Lexie Lee (Brenda); nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ with the Rev. John Myers officiant and eulogist. Burial will be in Langston Cemetery on Route 13. Peebles Funeral Home has been chosen to handle arrangements.
