Ebenezer United Methodist Church invites the community to come out next Saturday and get their oyster fix.

The annual oyster roast raises money for community projects in which the church is involved, as well as ministries of the church that need funds to operate.

“It’s mainly to support our many outreach ministries in the church,” said Art Latimer, who is involved in planning the event.

People who wish to attend the event must pre-order tickets by calling the church.

The event has been held annually for at least five years. Latimer said they hope to sell 300 tickets.

All the oysters are caught in the Nansemond and James rivers by Johnson and Sons Seafood in Eclipse.

“We shuck the oysters that are steamed and serve them on the half-shell,” Latimer said. Fried oysters also will be served.

For those who aren’t into oysters, there also will be Brunswick stew, North Carolina-style barbecue with all the fixings, hot dogs and hushpuppies.

“It truly is, for the money, probably the best value for food in town,” Latimer said. “People really enjoy it.”

The event will be held Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. at the church, 1589 Steeple Drive. Adult tickets are $20, teens age 13-17 are $10 and children 12 and younger are free. To reserve your ticket, call 238-2359 by Wednesday.
