East Washington Street was closed for several hours Sunday morning while police investigated a fatal vehicle accident.
The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m., and the road was reopened just before 11 a.m., according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle occupied by four people was traveling eastbound in the 2600 block of East Washington Street when it ran off the road to the left. The vehicle struck a ditch and rolled several times, ejecting one of the passengers before striking a house.
The ejected passenger died at the scene. The driver and two other passengers were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
The accident remains under investigation.
