Longwood University won its third-straight softball tournament to open the season, defeating both Iona College 1-0 and St. Peter’s College 11-0 Sunday during the Wilson DeMarini Longwood Spring Classic at Lancer Field in Farmville.
Senior Leigh Sexton of Suffolk (2-3, RBI) had an RBI double in the game against St. Peter’s, contributing to a five-run fourth inning for Longwood.
Senior Brittany Wilkins, a Nansemond-Suffolk Academy alumna, went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored for the Boston College recently in the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament, propelling the Eagles to 6-3 win in the opener.
With runners on first and second in the top of the fifth inning, Wilkins hit her first long ball of the year to give her team a four-run advantage and set up the eventual win.
Wilkins is batting .375 this season, with six RBIs and a home run to her credit so far.
