Police on Monday charged a man for failure to care for animals after he allegedly surrendered a malnourished pit bull to the animal shelter.

Adam Joseph Kelly, 21, allegedly surrendered the male dog named Cage to the shelter on Feb. 27. Cage is 2 to 3 years old, according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.

Cage was examined by a veterinarian and determined to be severely malnourished, George said. The dog has gained more than two pounds during his time at the shelter.

Cage should be available for adoption after the court date, which currently is set for March 26.
