Walter L. Artis, 65, of 507 Shoreline Road, Carrollton, Va., died Monday, March 12, 2012, at his residence. He is a native of Nansemond County and the son of the late Charlie Artis and Flossie Artis. He was also predeceased by one sister, Lucille Mizell, and one brother, James Artis.

He attended East Suffolk High School. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in transportation.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mary E. Artis; one son, Walter Donnell Artis, of Suffolk; four sisters, Ethel Boone, of Chesapeake, Shirley Madison (Predell), Flossie Hardison (William), Darlene Peterson (Donald), all of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Charlie Artis (Vernice), of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Walter Donnell, Tiffani, Morgan, Sharanda, Sharonda, Miles and Shelis; four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Marie McCrea (James); four aunts; one uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s
Witnesses, 4650 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements.
