An Isle of Wight County grand jury on Monday indicted a former sheriff’s deputy on child pornography charges.

Matthew Lyons, 21, was arrested on three counts of reproducing or selling child pornography in August. Lyons remains in Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Former Sheriff Charlie Phelps in September fired Lyons and asked state police to investigate after deputies saw an email in which Lyons had asked for naked photos of teenage girls and minors engaged in sexual acts, according to court records. Lyons had left his personal Yahoo account open on an office computer.

According to court records, state police seized two computers from Lyons’ mobile home in Smithfield on Sept. 16.

He began working for the Sheriff’s Office in November 2010, and his duties included a temporary assignment at Windsor Elementary School.
