A Franklin woman was in serious condition Friday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a 10:30 a.m. Thursday accident in Suffolk.

Betty Allen, 75, was hurt when John Wayne Umphlette, 46, of Gates, N.C., attempted to drive his pickup from Holy Neck Road onto South Quay Road, Suffolk police said. Umphlette drove his 1992 Chevy into the path of a 2011 Lincoln Navigator driven by Allen, police said.

Her vehicle rolled three times and landed in the Pure gas station parking lot at Route 58 and South Quay Road.

Allen and a passenger were freed from the vehicle and flown to the hospital in Norfolk. Police did not identify the passenger; without a name, the passenger’s condition could not be checked.

Umphlette was treated and released from Southampton Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.
