Graves inducted into hall of fame

Marvin L. Graves Jr. recently was inducted into the Washington Charter School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

The Suffolk native was Suffolk City Player of the Year and Conference Player of the Year at Lakeland High School. He also was a four-year starter and two-year captain at Pfeiffer University and Gardner-Webb University, respectively. He led the South Atlantic Conference in assists and steals his senior year. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences with a minor in human services.

Graves is in his 12th year at Friendship Blow Pierce Charter School as the athletic director. He has accumulated 10 Washington Charter School Athletic Association championships in various sports.

During his time as Blow Pierce’s boys basketball coach, he amassed over 150 wins, reached the championship game five times and won four Washington Charter School Athletic Association championships.

Graves and his wife, Tomiko, have five children, Ebony, Amari, Jamir, Lea and Amina Luverta.
