Suffolk police this weekend arrested and charged a Portsmouth man with crimes against a 13-year-old girl.
Laurence Vernon Carter, 40, of the 2300 block of Chestnut Street, is charged with four counts each of carnal knowledge of a child between 13 and 15, crimes against nature, taking indecent liberties with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Police say Carter met the young teen on a telephone chat line in December. He later allegedly made several visits to Suffolk, where he engaged in sexual acts with the girl.
The victim’s family learned of the alleged calls Sunday and arranged a meeting. They then contacted police, who apprehended Carter in the area of the meeting.
He is being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail with no bond.
