Suffolk man killed in Portsmouth

A Suffolk man died Sunday night after being shot at a convenience store in Portsmouth and attempting to drive away.

Keiontre Laquan Rodgers, 19, of the 6200 block of Apple Street, was found dead in the driver’s seat of a Dodge Avenger after Portsmouth officers nearby heard shots and responded to the scene, according to a press release from the Portsmouth Police Department.

Portsmouth police would like to talk to this man in reference to the murder of a Suffolk man they believe he may have witnessed.

According to the release, the shooting occurred about 9:12 p.m. in the area of the 2600 block of Frederick Blvd. Officers responded to the intersection of Frederick and Deep Creek boulevards and found the vehicle Rodgers was driving crashed into a utility pole with him in the driver’s seat.

Detectives discovered the victim had stopped at a gas pump at the BP station on Frederick Boulevard. A male suspect approached the victim while he was sitting in the vehicle. During the encounter, the suspect shot the victim.

Rodgers apparently attempted to leave the area but died as he was driving. He was not the registered owner of the vehicle.

The motive is not known at this time, according to the press release. No detailed suspect information is available.

Apple Street is located off Townpoint Road just west of the Portsmouth city line.
