Senior Taylor Gomer went the distance in a five-inning Metro Athletic Conference contest won by Isle of Wight Academy 11-1 Friday against Portsmouth Christian.

Gomer allowed two hits to improve to 2-0 on the season and went three-for-three at the plate, scoring a run and driving in another.

The Chargers staked their starter to a seven-run lead in the first on a two-RBI double by catcher Aaron Flanagan and a three-run triple by junior Hunter Triplett. Teammates Gage Rogers and Gomer also drove in runs in the first.

Leading 9-2 entering the final inning, Matt Bratton led off with a walk, and Ben Epps was hit by a pitch. A single by Matthew Herrmann loaded the bases, and another walk to Greg Chaffer plated the 10th run, leaving the bases full.

Rainer Marfio reached on a fielder’s choice, which resulted in an Epps force-out at the plate for the inning’s first out.

With Portsmouth Christian clinging to life, IWA’s Travis Jones worked the count full before walking and driving home the winning run.

IWA is 3-1 and 1-0 in the conference.
