A man who tried to steal nearly $100 of meat from Walmart was caught when he left his wallet in his shopping cart.
The loss prevention officer for the store on College Drive contacted police just after noon Thursday and told them the suspect had placed seven packages of ribs that had been in his cart into Walmart shopping bags and attempted to leave the store without paying for them.
The loss prevention officer confronted the suspect, who was initially cooperative, according to a police report. But when the officer motioned for the suspect to enter the loss prevention office, the suspect pushed the officer’s arm and ran from the store.
The officer didn’t bother to give chase, because the suspect had left his wallet in the shopping cart, according to the police report.
All the ribs were recovered, and a Suffolk police officer received the wallet, according to a report. The ribs totaled $94.27.
A city spokeswoman said the loss prevention officer was conferring with his supervisors to determine whether to pursue charges.
