Spots still are available to tee up for the NAACP next week.
The Nansemond-Suffolk branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is hosting its first golf tournament fundraiser at The Riverfront Golf Club on April 5.
“I think it’s an opportunity for the community of Suffolk to have a good time and play golf,” said Lue Ward, branch president.
Proceeds will be used for the branch’s education department.
NAACP member Wayne White, who is the golf coach at I.C. Norcom High School, came up with the idea to do a golf tournament.
“I thought doing this as a fundraiser would be a good thing to do,” he said.
The tournament will be a four-man best ball captain’s choice format. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for first place in each flight, closest to the pin and longest drive.
Registration begins at noon, and the driving range opens at the same time. A shotgun start will be at 1 p.m.
The fee is $75 per golfer and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and buffet following the tournament.
The Riverfront Golf Club is located at 5200 River Club Drive in Suffolk.
To sign up for the tournament, call any of the following individuals: Lue Ward at 513-5467; Vanessa Savage at 934-1055; Arthur Richardson at 488-8590; Johnnie Adams at 934-1941; or Wayne White at 334-4624.
