Participants set out on the course at last year’s Walk for Life, a fundraiser for the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater.

The annual Walk for Life to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater will be held in downtown Suffolk on April 21.

“The Walk for Life is a great event,” said Desiree Gaul, communications manager for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. “It’s a fun time to bring your family out.”

The Crisis Pregnancy Center offers a variety of medical, practical and counseling services to support women dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. One location is in Suffolk at 302 N. Main St.

“Abortion is a crisis in our community,” Gaul said, noting that about 7,785 abortions occurred in South Hampton Roads last year. “The Crisis Pregnancy Center is here to support women in our communities and walk through this phase of life with them.”

The organization has four locations throughout the area — medical clinics in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and satellite centers in Portsmouth and Suffolk.

The locations offer ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, pregnancy confirmation by a physician, parenting and prenatal classes, tangible resources such as strollers, clothes and other baby needs, an abortion recovery program and more.

“All of the resources we provide are at no cost to the clients because of the generous donations of people and churches and organizations,” Gaul said.

To that end, the goal for this year’s Walk for Life is to raise $250,000. The theme is “Love Revolution.”

At the Suffolk walk, there will be a live band, a bounce house and popcorn, tours of the Suffolk location and more activities, said Laura Allison, event coordinator for the Crisis Pregnancy Center.

“It’s kind of a neat way for the community to have a look into what we do, have a chance to look inside and see what’s happening,” Gaul said.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church parking lot across from the Suffolk location. All participants must be registered prior to walk day. The walk will begin about 9:30 a.m.

If you cannot make the Suffolk walk, others are scheduled April 14 at Mt. Trashmore or April 28 at the Virginia Zoo.
