Not a single occupant of a vehicle involved in a Tuesday morning crash that killed a 16-year-old was using a seat belt, booster seat or child safety seat, according to a police report.

The driver of the vehicle, 43-year-old James Patrick Normile IV, fell asleep at the wheel when the crash occurred at 6:14 a.m., according to the report.

The Virginia Beach resident was driving his 2004 Toyota Sequoia eastbound on Holland Road about 1.2 miles east of Lummis Road when the crash occurred.

After he allegedly fell asleep, the vehicle ran off the road to the left into the median, struck a culvert and rolled onto its side, according to the report. An adult female and 3-year-old child were ejected from the vehicle.

James Patrick Normile, 16, died at the scene.

His father, the driver, is listed as having serious injuries. All the others in the vehicle also were listed as seriously injured: 41-year-old Elizabeth Normile, 3-year-old Lola Normile, 10-year-old Jack Normile and 17-year-old Gaela Ruth Normile.

All five were transported to area hospitals in the aftermath of the crash.
