City under severe thunderstorm watch

UPDATE 8:35 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm watch has expired.

UPDATE 7:35 p.m.: The thunderstorm has moved out of the warned area. The city remains under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Posted 7 p.m.: A portion of the city is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 7:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service reports the thunderstorm is producing quarter-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. It was slamming Whaleyville around 6:56 p.m., according to the weather report.

The storm is moving southeast at 20 miles per hour.

The warning is in effect for the southernmost area of the city. The remainder of the city is under a severe thunderstorm watch.

People in the path of the storm are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business. Do not drive into areas where water covers the road.
