Isle of Wight Academy bowed to superior pitching, falling to Atlantic Shores Christian School 5-0 Monday.
The win puts the Seahawks (17-9, 7-1) in sole possession of first place in the Metro Athletic Conference going into the end this week of the regular season. Conference tournament play begins May 8. IWA fell to 15-4, 7-2.
Shores’ Jordan Sergent dominated the Chargers, allowing only four hits in seven innings. He struck out six, hit one batter and faced only 25 hitters. In the other meeting with IWA earlier this season, Sergent pitched six innings, allowed six hits and an earned run, striking out 11.
As for the Chargers, they hit Sergent, but often found Seahawks defenders in the balls’ paths. Their best scoring opportunities came in the first and third innings. Both times, IWA advanced a runner into scoring position with less than two outs; both runners were eventually stranded. As for Shores’ part, they committed no fielding errors.
Sergent helped his cause at the plate, batting 1-for-3, driving in a run. Ray Plymette was 2-for-2, driving in two runs. Toren Bolden was 1-for-3 with two RBI and scored a run.
