This park-and-ride lot on Portsmouth Boulevard is one of four projects that will be funded with a $2.65 million grant from the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization.

The city will spend a $2.65 million grant making improvements to two intersections and two park-and-ride lots.

The money came from the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization, Public Works Director Eric Nielsen told City Council members during their meeting last week.

The news will be welcome to motorists who regularly travel Bridge Road. More than half the money will be used to improve its intersections with Bennetts Pasture Road and Lee Farm Lane.

About $750,000 will be spent for each intersection to extend the turn lanes to prevent traffic stacking up into the through lanes at each intersection, Nielsen said. In addition, the traffic lights at each intersection will be upgraded and linked together for better timing.

Also, $1.15 million will be spent at the city’s two park-and-ride lots for improvements to the entrances, stormwater drainage and landscaping, as well as new pavement, curbs and gutters.

The work should be completed by spring of next year, Nielsen said.
