SA girls get big tourney win

Southampton Academy opened the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Tuesday with a 16-0 win at home.

The team includes three players from Suffolk, Rachel Holland, Chelsea Speight and Skylar Goodman.

Senior Chelsea Speight was in the circle for her 10th win of the year. She pitched a five-inning run-rule shutout, allowing only one hit while striking out two. Speight was backed by an aggressive defense, which played a flawless game in an outstanding team effort.

The Courtland team had 22 hits for a combined 0.759 batting average. Leading the team offensively was Speight, who went 4 for 4 with four RBIs.

Seniors Skylar Goodman (3 for 3, with two RBIs) and Rachel Holland (3 for 3) also contributed; along with seniors Beth Waller, 3 for 4, and Brigitte Bradshaw, 2 for 3, who had 3 RBIs between them; juniors Whitley Smith and Kate Wachsmann and  eighth-grade shortstop Ashten Hinkle, who were all 2 for 3, with one RBI each. Rounding out the total team effort was sophomore Peyton Pittman, 1 for 3.

Sophomores Katelyn Newsome and Morgan Pope were courtesy runners for the pitcher and catcher. Newsome had three stolen bases, and Pope provided one.

The Lady Raiders are coached by Jeb Bradshaw and Scott Speight.

“We played a great game today, and we needed to come out strong,” Bradshaw said. “This win was a total team effort, and I’m very proud of the girls.”

Southampton Academy’s next game is the conference semi-final against Brunswick Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Tidewater Academy.
