Edward Dickerson Owens Sr., 86, of the 1100 block of Truman Road, Suffolk, Va., died Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Autumn Care of Suffolk. He was the son of the late Jessie and Bessie King Owens.

He was a World War II veteran and retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief with 23 years of service. He also retired from the Suffolk Public Schools Transportation Department after 23 years. Mr. Owens was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorressia Brinkley Owens; daughter, Kimberly Owens, of Fort Eustis, Va.; sons, Edward D. Owens Jr. (Stacia), of Manassas, Va., and William Allen Owens (Sabrina), of Suffolk; sister, Margaret O. King, of Greensboro, N.C.; sisters in-law, Connie Harris (John) and Paulette Butler (Huley) of Suffolk; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church on Copeland Road, Suffolk, with the Rev. Ernest Simmons Jr. officiating.
