Pauline M. Butler

Pauline M. Butler, 76, of 211 ½ Cedar St., Suffolk, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Halifax, N.C., and the daughter of the late Walter and Chine Harvey-Mayo. She was predeceased by one son, Raleigh Dowdy; two sisters, Betty Blount and Evelina Mayo.

She was educated in the Suffolk Public Schools system. She was employed with Sentara Obici Hospital as supervisor of the dietary department for 18 years. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for several years with Bethlehem Christian Church. She later joined St. Paul Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the Usher Board. Later in life, she joined New Mt. Joy Food For Living Ministries, where she was under the leadership of Bishop W.P. Wiggins. At New Mt. Joy she served in the following capacities: First Senior Choir, Hospitality Committee, Nursing Unit, Kitchen Committee for the New Generation Choir, Mother’s Board and Sunday School member.

She married Huley Butler Jr. and they were blessed with 10 wonderful children. She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters, Wanda Britt (William), Clara Weaver (Albert), Paulette Wiggins (Harvey), Annette Banks (Daryl), Sandra Arrington (Carter), all of Suffolk; four sons, Huley Butler III (Paulette), Clyde Butler, Larry Butler, Michael Butler (Susie), all of Suffolk; six stepchildren, Mary Anne Holliman, Jeanette Artis, Timothy Copeland, Timothy Stevenson, Bobby Stevenson and Rodney Eure; three cousins that were as sisters and a brother to her, Vanessa Thorne, Richard Thorne and Shirley Baker; sister-in-law, Emily Butler; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one goddaughter, Leslie Mayfield; three devoted friends, Ann Pearson, Raleigh Dowdy and James Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2012, at New Mt. Joy Food For Living Ministries officiated by Pastor Viola Parker. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 211½ Cedar St. and 2002 Regency Drive, Suffolk. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements.
