Police: Man on moped tried to elude arrest

A Suffolk man is accused of attempting to elude police on the back of a moped.

Suffolk police on Sunday arrested a man who allegedly tried to escape a traffic stop first on the back of his scooter and then on foot.

About 12:20 a.m. Sunday, police observed Jason Bishop Cornett, 29, of the 300 block of Turlington Road, riding his moped in the 1200 block of Holland Road, according to a police report.

He allegedly was operating the moped in a reckless manner and was being stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the report stated.

According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, Cornett “turned into the Holland Plaza in an attempt to elude police.”

According to the report, Cornett stopped the moped, ran from the scene and was chased across Holland Road and into the Suffolk Golf Course parking lot, where he was taken into custody.

He was charged with third offense driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain proper control, eluding police and obstruction of justice.
