Harold U. Blythe has been named to the Obici Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Directors.

George Y. Birdsong, chairman of the Foundation’s 12-member board of directors, announced Blythe’s appointment on Monday. Blythe replaces former Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent Joyce H. Trump on the board. Trump is now a Board Member Emeritus, according to Foundation spokesman Rick Spencer.

Blythe served from 1988 to 2001 as the president and chief executive officer for the Bank of Suffolk and James River Bankshares. Now retired, the Walters resident continues to be involved in community service as a member of the Isle of Wight Planning Commission and the Walters Ruritan Club. He also is a board member of Farmers Bank and is the finance committee chairman at Franklin Congregational Christian Church.

He also is a former president of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce — Suffolk Division, as well as the Suffolk United Way.

Members of the Obici Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors are responsible for the organization’s strategic direction, along with maintaining oversight and control of the Foundation.

The Foundation was created in 2006 with assets established through the philanthropy of Amedeo Obici, along with funds from the merger of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital and Sentara Healthcare.

Since its inception in 2006, the Foundation has provided more than $20 million in grant funding.
