A grand jury on Wednesday indicted a man who is accused of engaging in sexual acts with a teen girl he met on a telephone chat line.

Laurence Vernon Carter, 40, of the 2300 block of Chestnut Street in Portsmouth, was indicted on 11 counts of sex crimes. He was among 52 defendants indicted on 163 charges.

According to a news release sent by police in March, Carter allegedly met the young teen on a telephone chat line in December. He later allegedly made several visits to Suffolk and engaged in sexual acts with the girl.

The victim’s family learned of the alleged crimes and arranged a meeting, then contacted police, who arrested the man in the area of the meeting.
