Unexploded fireworks were found in a North Suffolk neighborhood on Friday.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue and the Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the discovery of unexploded fireworks in the 8900 block of River Crescent in the Cedar Point neighborhood.

The discovery was made about 12:16 p.m. Friday when an off-duty firefighter was mowing his lawn and ran over one of the devices, causing an explosion. The firefighter was not injured. Four devices have been found at this time, according to a news release from the city.

It is believed the fireworks were “duds” from the Crittenden, Eclipse and Hobson Ruritan Club’s exhibition on Wednesday, according to the news release. The fireworks would have landed in the yards after failing to explode in the air.

Virginia State Police has provided assistance in securing and removing the unexploded devices to a safe location. The fireworks company has been contacted and is sending personnel to assist.

The Fire Marshal’s Office warns residents living in the area to use extreme caution when going into their yards and call 911 if a questionable object is found. Residents should not touch the devices if they find them, according to the release.
