SUFFOLK — Emma Virginia Carr Griggs, 86, passed away on July 31, 2012.

She was the daughter of the late Lennie and Lillie Carr. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Shanna Richardson; three sisters, Lucille Daughtery, Nellie White, Sara Carter; a brother, L.J. Carr Jr.; and a great-grandson, Luke A. Yarborough.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Joseph L. Griggs; son, Robert C. Griggs and wife Carolyn, of Kingsland, Ga.; son-in-law, C. Leigh Richardson, of Virginia Beach; sister, Myrtle Ingvaldsen, of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She worked in the private sector for a number of years prior to being employed by the federal government in 1966. She enjoyed a long and successful career in the federal service and retired in June of 1988.

Over the years she was a member of many organizations, including the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, served as the president of the Suffolk Woman’s Club after retirement, was very active with several garden clubs, a volunteer at Obici Hospital for many years, and she was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and was a Sunday school teacher of young children and involved with WMU for many years.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley with burial following at Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.

Tuesday, Heaven received a special angel. She will be sadly missed by all her knew her.
