Third-party logistics provider Coastal Logistics Group Inc. has announced plans to expand its Suffolk operation by 50 percent after less than a year.

At its 6701 College Drive facility, the company offers warehousing and distribution services, cross-docking and transloading, a rail service with Norfolk Southern, export packaging, project cargo and transportation management, according to a recent company presentation.

The expansion will expand the 74,000 square feet of class A warehouse space to 129,000 square feet, increasing the number of dock doors from 14 to 25, with four oversized doors, two of those with ramps.

Project cargo marshalling and outside storage areas will expand from one acre to three acres, and onsite trailer parking spaces will double to 60.

The site will double its workforce to 10 employees.

The company chose Suffolk to serve customers in the Mid Atlantic and Port of Virginia markets less than a year ago, according to a press release, describing the location as “a strategic hub for distribution, packing and crating, and logistics support services to this fast-growing port and the businesses that rely on it.”

“We were confident CLG would excel in the Virginia market, but we are really pleased that results have come to fruition so quickly,” stated Coastal Logistics Group President Chad Barrow in the release.

“We are also continuing to seek new business for the Port of Virginia and also looking into expansion in several other locations in the U.S.”

Sales and Marketing Coordinator Michelle Gravine said the company selected Suffolk and the Port of Virginia for the centrality.

“We’re also (strategically) positioning ourselves, for once they do the upgrade of the Panama Canal, once they get that open, there’s only going to be so many ports … that can handle the big ships,” she said.

According to the presentation, the Suffolk location is 5 ½ miles from APM Terminals Virginia, less than 14 miles from Norfolk International Terminals, 6 ½ miles from Portsmouth Marine Terminal, and 4 ½ from Newport News Marine Terminal.

It is less than a mile to Interstate 664 and less than nine miles to I-64.

Coastal Logistics Group, a privately owned and operated company, is headquartered in Savannah, Ga., and also has a location in Memphis, Tenn.

It has been cited as one of the fastest growing privately owned companies in the country, and some of its clients are General Dynamics, CAT, Dole, Carrier, Daimler, Detroit Diesel and Siemens.
