George T. Jones Jr.

Mr. George T. “G.T.” Jones Jr., of Chesapeake, Va., passed away into the arms of the Lord on Aug. 7, 2012. As the middle child and only son of three children, he was born in Danville, Va., on Nov. 17, 1933, to George T. Jones Sr. and Lillie Adams Jones. George graduated from John M. Langston High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hampton University. Mr. Jones was an educator for more than 30 years, serving in the Nansemond County (East Suffolk and John F. Kennedy high schools) and Isle of Wight County School Systems, as well as civil service for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Mr. Jones married Velma Allen, of Mechanicsville, Va., in 1963, and in that union they had one daughter, Cerelia A. Jones Sumlin (Charles), of Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Jones was an active member of East End Baptist Church for more than 40 years until his health declined.
Gone home before him are his parents; his sisters, Frances and Brenda; as well as his beloved wife, Velma. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law; one brother-in-law, Thomas Allen; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Bagby and Marilyn Brooks. He had several cousins with whom he shared a special bond: James Adams, Odessa Smith, Karen Jennings, Arthur Adams and Edith Russell. He also had several neighbors of more than 40 years that were true friends until very end: James Demby, Mary Edmonds and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Keele.
Funeral services will be officiated by Dr. Mark A. Croston Sr. at East End Baptist Church, 523 E. Washington St., Suffolk, Va., on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. There will be a wake at Crocker Funeral Home, 900 E. Washington St., Suffolk, Va., on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
