A Suffolk woman was arrested Saturday after police say she left her 7-month-old baby in front of an apartment complex.

Shannon Michole Goldston, 23, was arrested on charges of cruelty and injuries to children and abuse and neglect of children, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

The incident began on Friday, when officers responded to a call about 10 p.m. to the Wilson Pines Apartments in the 2500 block of East Washington Street. The caller said a woman had left a baby outside the building, Klink said.

Upon arrival, officers noticed a silver Honda leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. They did not find a baby in front of the building, but were told by several witnesses that the woman had come back for the baby and then left again. Police looked around the area for the car but did not spot it.

She returned about 15 minutes later with the child in a car seat, which allegedly was not secured with a seatbelt, Klink said. She was placed under arrest at the apartment complex and released her 7-month-old son to the godmother.

Child Protective Services was notified, she added.
