Nansemond River routed Woodrow Wilson High School 42-6 in their first game of the 2012 season on Friday night in Portsmouth.

The Warriors jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Their defense was a force to be reckoned with. While Wilson managed 145 yards in the air, they were limited to only 23 on the ground.

NR’s defense also created game-breaking turnovers that set up the offense for easy scores.

Early in the game, Wilson fumbled a kickoff and NR’s Marvin Branch recovered it, returning it to Wilson’s 2-yard line, where DeShon Saunders took it the rest of the way.

Branch also teamed up with Tracey Parker Jr. in creating a fumble that ended up leading to Nate Wyche’s 2-yard score.

In the second quarter, KaShon Saunders had a 65-yard interception return that set up Darwin Barbee for a 1-yard scoring run.

The Warriors’ offense was dominant as well, producing 298 total yards, 231 of which came on the ground. Latrell Sandifer led the way with 20 carries for 170 yards and two 2-yard touchdown runs. Barbee threw for 67 yards, going 7 for 13 with one interception. DeShon Saunders scored twice on 2- and 4-yard carries.
