Mattie Rose Whitaker Lassiter, 75 passed away on Aug. 31, 2012, in Detroit, Mich. She was a native of Henderson, N.C., born on June 27, 1937, to the late Mary Elizabeth Walker Whitaker and David Whitaker Sr.

Mattie leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband of 55 years, Russell; seven devoted children, Crystal Cooper, of San Antonio, Texas, Cheryl Lassiter, of Detroit, Mich., Denise Facey (Norman), of Waldorf, Md., Russell Lassiter Jr. (Latresisa), of Fort Lewis, Ga., Yvette Jones (Michael), of Chesapeake, Va., Hope Lassiter, of Detroit, Mich., and Rosenna Boone, of Suffolk; sister, Barbara J. Little (Hurris Sr.), of Suffolk; brother, David Whitaker Jr. (Jacqueline), of Southfield, Mich.; sister, Charleen Thomas (Ronald Sr.), of Detroit, Mich.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Healing Chapel Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Morris Allmond. Interment will be in Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery.
