An inmate who escaped from work-release custody Thursday morning was caught in Hampton around 8:45 p.m., according to a news release from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office.
David Perkins, 24, whose last known address was the 4000 block of Desert Road in Suffolk, allegedly escaped about 7:30 a.m. from the Isle of Wight fairgrounds, where he was working in preparation for next week’s fair.
According to the release, Perkins escaped from a bathroom and was picked up by his girlfriend, Britney Jane Lee, 22, of the 100 block of Shelter Cove Way in Carrollton.
The two were caught at a Hampton gas station. “Intensive investigative work by the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office aided by information given by the public led to the capture and arrest of the suspects,” the release stated.
Recorded telephone conversations from the jail indicate Perkins planned the escape and stated that “he doesn’t intend to be recaptured,” according to the release.
Perkins was convicted on charges of grand larceny and two counts of fraud earlier this year, according to the release. If he had stayed on the work release program, he would have been released in about two months.
Authorities have secured warrants for Perkins for escape and for Lee for aiding and abetting escape.
