Herbert Thomas Scott

Herbert Thomas Scott, born June 23, 1932, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Oct. 19, 2012. He passed away peacefully at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was the son of the late Ralf and Florine Scott, of Suffolk, Va. He was predeceased by his son, Wallace Thomas Scott; sisters, Elvira Holland, Alma Dolberry; brother, Willie R. Scott; brothers-in-law, Chester Holland, Alfonso Dolberry, Henry Ridley, and one cousin (raised as a brother) Lloyd Scott Jr.

Mr. Scott was employed with the city of Suffolk for 43 years before his retirement in 1997. He was a labor supervisor for the Department of Public Works Grounds Division. He was known throughout the city, with some people affectionately calling him the “Mosquito Man” as spraying for mosquitoes was part of his duties with the Department of Public Works. Mr. Scott was a life member of Gethsemane Baptist Church on Copeland Road in Suffolk, pastored by the Rev. Ernest Simmons Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Dora A. Scott; three daughters, Mildred Mial, of Perryville, Md., Gloria Cuffee and Jennifer Wells (Michael), of Suffolk; three sisters, Essie Ridley (Henry-deceased), of Suffolk, Levy Jordan, of Catonsville, Md., Josephine Christian (John), of Newport News, Va.; one sister-in-law, Ometta Scott (Willie-deceased), of Franklin, Va.; five grandchildren, Yolanda Scott, Kenny Knight, Eugene Smith, LeAndre Scott and Rashad Harris; eight great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends, and honorary close friend of the family, Earlene Lee.

A homegoing service will be held at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 1656 Copeland Road, Suffolk, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Ernest Simmons Jr. Burial will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The family will assemble at the home, located at 204 Katherine St., at noon on Wednesday. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
