Daphne Sheffield Chapman

Daphne Sheffield Chapman died on Dec. 9, 2012, at Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk, Va. She was 96 years old.

She was born in Waverly, Va., on March 10, 1916, the daughter of Samuel Benjamin Sheffield and Sara Davis Sheffield. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dr. W. Holmes Chapman Jr.; two brothers, Leo B. Sheffield and Samuel B. Sheffield.

She was a graduate of Waverly High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. From 1934 to 1939, she was a physician’s assistant to Dr. Jennings of Waverly. In 1940 she joined the administrative staff of Lakeview Clinic in Suffolk, where she was employed until her marriage in 1941.

Mrs. Chapman had been a member of the Suffolk Christian Church since 1940, serving on numerous committees and boards during her long affiliation.

She had a lifetime love of gardening. She was especially fond of rooting bushes from the gardens of her friends and relatives and then giving the bushes to their children and families. She was a former member of the Riverview Garden Club.

Survivors include one son, William H. Chapman III and wife, Peggy Lane Chapman, of Duck, N.C.; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Chapman Arguelles and husband, David Arguelles; and two great-grandchildren, Everett Chapman Arguelles and Darin Andrew Arguelles, of Herndon, Va.; two nieces, Barbara Sheffield Wicks, of Petersburg, Va., and Susan Sheffield Barrett, of Colonial Heights, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mary Penn Chapman Butts, of South Hill, Va.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Michael Halley of Suffolk Christian Church at Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. Family visitation will be immediately after the graveside service in the Portsmouth Room of Lake Prince Woods, 100 Anna Good Way, Suffolk, VA 23434.
