A smoke alarm may have saved the lives of residents of a group of Holladay Street duplexes, officials said Wednesday.
The second-floor occupant who was awakened by the sounding smoke detector was one of 11 adults who were safely evacuated from the four duplexes, according to Suffolk spokesperson Diana Klink.
Firefighters were called to the scene of the two-alarm fire at about 4:59 a.m., Klink stated in a press release. Firefighters found two adjoining two-story duplexes directly affected by the fire, and because of their proximity, firefighters also evacuated the two duplexes that adjoined them.
All 11 adults who were evacuated are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Klink stated. There were no injuries reported in the incident.
The Suffolk Fire Marshall’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
