The Nansemond-Suffolk varsity boys’ basketball team started 2013 with its first win of the season, defeating the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on the road by the score of 39-38 on Thursday.
With just over 12 seconds remaining in the game, junior forward John Hogan grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball in for the go-ahead basket. An NSA defense that had been stingy since the second quarter forced a turnover to seal the game.
Freshman swingman Logan Lokie led the Saints with 11 points, while Hogan finished with eight.
NSA showed heart after beginning the second quarter in a major hole, down 22-4.
“(We) just gradually worked our way back into it,” Saints’ head coach Randolph Davis said.
After a 20-point first quarter, NSA held Appomattox to 18 points for the final three quarters.
“So, from a defensive standpoint, we just did a nice job, period,” Davis said.
Nansemond-Suffolk (1-11, 0-0) visits Alliance Christian tonight.
